Gettin' My Skinny On

If someone told me a year ago that a year from now I would be 48 lbs lighter... I wouldn't have believed them.

It started as a bet between my sister and I. We were both feeling sorry for ourselves wanting to loose weight but had no motivation to do anything about it. She lives in southern Utah and I in Alaska. I remember telling her that I didn't care anymore and had no motivation. I told her that it bothered me that I didn't care. I wanted a quick fix a miracle pill or to somehow obtain large amounts of money to get weight loss surgery done. I wanted to lose weight by doing nothing. Since this was not an options my sister, Lynn, suggested we both lose weight together like a competition. I REALLY DID NOT WANT TO DO THIS, but with constant nagging I accepted the challenge.

Around the same time my work was promoting a 10 in 10 program. Lose 10 lbs in 10 weeks. I thought to myself, I could do that! 1 lb a week. This program would have weekly meetings on Thursday nights. I couldn't go because my son had piano practice. So I gave up on the whole losing weight idea. On the Thursday this program was to begin a notice was sent out to staff and I again thought to myself... I can't go, but took it upon myself to call to see if they had brochures or educational material that I could pick up because I couldn't make the Thursday night meetings. They suggested to come on Fridays during my lunch break. This worked well for me. I went to the first meeting and was told that in order to be successful I needed to attend the meetings each week. I did what was told and learned a lot from the instructors and other attendees.

With the help of co-workers I also attended Zumba at our local Recreational center and discovered that I liked it. I also enjoy Just Dance 2 on the Wii.

Through one of the meetings I learned of a free iphone app called "Myfitnesspal" where I could track my calories gained and loss.

Then I watched the numbers on the scale go down at each of my weekly weigh ins.

Watching the numbers go down was my motivation. Co-workers even noticed my clothes getting looser.

I'm rockin' the skinny jeans and my face was getting smaller too...

Sooooo, I did win the bet with my sister. She did lose weight and she has told me that I'm her new motivation... glad I can help, Lynn ;-)

I've been asked what's my secret and here it is... just plain eating less and exercising... WHO KNEW???

I refused to starve myself and I eat whatever I want but in smaller portions or if I want to eat more I know I need to work out harder.

So there it is, no lipo, no Weight Watchers, no Jenny Craig, no Slim Fast, no Hydrolux, no Sensa... okay, okay, there was a little Sensa but I was exercising and eating less at the same time. I attribute my loss more towards that than using Sensa. Though I do have to admit that Sensa did curb my cravings for the first month ONLY.

I refuse to be a spokes person for any fad diets or commercial weight loss programs. Losing weight is a continuous struggle and I don't think I'm done. I'm maintaining and have been for the past few months. I was hoping to lose 50lbs by 2012 but that didn't happen I'm short a couple of pounds and I'm not going to beat myself up over it.

It's January 1, 2012 today... What's your New Years resolution? If it's losing weight this is your year to do it. Everyone is doing it... and you can too.

My dear friend Sherry shared with me some of her native foods. She is Siberian Yupik originally from Gambell. From top to bottom here are the following mangtak (raw whale blubber), cooked walrus meat, qesni (cooked walrus boob) on the right, and manguna (cooked walrus skin). Growing up in rural Alaska this is common food. I've never been fond of mangtak also known as muktuk the white is the fat part and the black is the humpback whale skin which is like chewing through leather. Walrus meat isn't so bad, it's kinda like a fishy tasting beef. Qesni is more fatty, and manguna is kinda like cartiliage.

Confessions of a swagaholic...

As with any addict it's never my fault... it all started with my sister, Lynn, who sent me a link. At first I resisted temptation, but she kept pressuring me. I have succombed to peer pressure. I couldn't stop at just one search, I wanted more so I starting doing the surveys, the daily polls, special offers, searched videos, searched for codes, became a Facebook swagbucks page fan. There I met with other swagaholics and learned their lingo like the other swaggernauts. I was consumed with the four dailies, the midnight madness, doubles, triples, etc. I tempted friends and strangers who also became addicts. I've neglected my family in this process by not cleaning the house, letting the laundry pile up, ignoring my children, serving them quick meals such as pizza all for the sake of waiting for TSG (the swag guy) to post a hint to a code. AAAHHHHHHH!!!!!!! I've loss hours and hours of sleep... My dreams are about swagbucks. I refuse to go into recovery... instead click on the link above and join me in my obsession.

My New Smoked Salmon Labels

For those who don't know me. I make my own canning labels. Today I decided to make new smoked salmon labels because the other ones are outdated. I can't decide if I want the blue lettering or the red and if I want the zoomed in shot or not. Please help me decide.

Delicious Vietnam

So my sister, Lynn, convinced me to enter into a food blogging event from Delicious Vietnam to promote and explore the diversity of Vietnamese cuisine. The two founders a food lovers journey and ravenous couple have some great Vietnamese recipes.

Growing up in Nome, Alaska my mother has adapted a lot of Vietnamese cuisines with local caught food. Such as Moose pho instead of beef, bun rieu (tomato and crab noodle soup) with Alaskan king crab instead of dungeness, and various vietnamese fish dishes with local salmon instead of maybe the traditional catfish. Last year I entered a contest and won $100 for third place and our local Fisherman's Fair hosted by Norton Sound Economic Development Company, one of the rules was to make a dish using cod provided by the seafood plant in Nome (nortonsoundseafoodproducts.com). Using my Vietnamese/Alaskan background I ended up making Alaskan Cod Rolls which I posted to my recipes tab. Click on the link below to go to the post.

What Am I Doing?

I've created another monster called a blog. I've spent hours on here trying to figure it out, neglecting my kids. I want my blog to be as pretty as all the techy people but can't figure it out. Need help! I'd like a list preferably on my home page of blogs I follow. I'd like a cool picture thingy like "city girl in rural Alaska". And recipe categories/links like "ravenous couple". I love iweb designs but it's not compatible with blogger. Soooo, I don't know what I'm doing, HELP!
